Artist Essay About Painting
Painting Waterlilies is a dangerous practice for an artist. No matter how you handle your subject, you will invariably be pegged as another Monet. If you happened to be an impressionist, you`re in for a bad rap. Rest assures I paint thousands of completely different subjects without lily pads.
My paintings of Waterlilies are based on seeing many different ponds from the beautiful creation in front of the Clark Institute in Williamstown, MA to the large skating pond by Wellwood School in Fayetteville N. Y. This 24”x48” oil on panel has a composition with a strong vertical reflection across the water. The lily pads are in massive groups in mossy green and the lilies are dispersed in foreground fading into the distance—in a variety of pink and reds. A tree line at the horizon adds to the depth of my composition. The work is highly impressionistic with a heavy textural surface. It`s most affective in a large room with good viewing distance. If you happened to have a lily pond in your garden—I`m sure Claude would approve of my painting.
