Valfred Thelin  By Hall Groat Sr.

Val was a flamboyant person who loved people and his out front personality reflected well in his work. We first met at Atlantic City Boardwalk show where he won top prize– a trip to Europe. I had won a cash award but was envious of Val’s good fortune. His watercolor paintings were an extension of his personality and he used the color red in his architectural and abstract harbor scenes with bravura. He maintained a studio in Qgunquit, ME. by the ocean, and many of his paintings revealed the grandeur of the sea coast. Being uninhibited, one day he rode horseback up and down Ogunquit beach wearing colorful silk pajamas his mother had made for him. Life to Valfred was not only the joy of creativity – it was his joy of meeting and helping other artists. He traveled the United States conducting painting workshops and demonstrations. Many of his students became his customers.   Later in life Val and I were selected as judges for Sarasota, Florida Art Association annual member’s exhibition. He later invited me to use his apartment and motorcycle to get to the beach while he exhibited in other parts of Florida. In his career Val had won a large amount of prize money for his watercolors in museum exhibitions and his work was well received by art critics and the general public. When I look at my Thelin paintings, I can still see Val, who passed on too young. He had been working on his art book and invited me to send him images of my work for the upcoming publication, but time ran out for this fun loving and flamboyant American Artist.

Valfred Thelin 1934 -1989:He was born in Waterbury, Connecticut and was trained in the European apprentice tradition by his Grandfather, a muralist who came to the United States from Sweden in the late 1800s. His father Carl Valfred Thelin, a commercial artist strongly influenced his work as well.

Valfred Thëlin was an internationally recognized artist, trained as a youth by his grandfather in the European apprentice tradition. He went on to study at the School of the Art Institue of Chicago, and the Art Students League of New York, participating as well in seminars throughout Europe and working one-on-one with Hans Hofmann and Georgia O’Keefe. Valfred has been featured in major art publications and is in many museums, including the Museum of Modern Art and Smithsonian, private collections, and galleries here and abroad. He conducted over 200 workshops and demonstrations in the USA and ten other countries, and was invited artist at three major universities. He juried dozens of competitions, held seminars in Mexico, and was the recipient of over 95 major awards. He was a member of the American Watercolor Society, among others, and listed in Who’s Who in American Art.

Valfred’s book, Watercolor: Let the Medium Do It, was published by Watson-Guptill and can still be obtained from many sources on the Internet. If you’re lucky, you might be able to track down tapes from the Thëlin Video Workshop series.
