Artist’s Notes on Painting Sporting Themes

Playing tennis has brought great joy although as the years amount, one needs to get off their legs. At this point the artist goes to work painting sporting subjects that he may have excelled in at a younger age. Attending the U.S. Tennis Championships and meeting players and old friends you once competed against becomes important in your career. After years in sports, I have found picking up my brush, standing at an easel, and painting all the people and the action matches to be fulfilling. Recently our studio received an order from Spain for 25 paintings based on tennis. Many of these works will be displayed in a museum in the UK. In communicating with the Spanish collector, the jargon used often created difficulty in completely understanding what was being conveyed. Therefore in business you sometimes must be a mind reader. Fortunately when it comes to the game of tennis there is an international language that makes it easier.

Lacrosse is a sport that spans the ages, over 1000 years and introduced to North Americans by Native Americans. It has been steadily gaining popularity with our high schools and colleges and the Onondaga nation in the Syracuse area. Baseball began close to 200 years ago and to those fans it has become a way of life. In Brooklyn on an art business trip, I ran into an elderly man who showed me his card. He was awarded the honor of being the Dodger’s number one baseball fan. The old gentleman was near tears about his team moving to Los Angeles. Probably no fans in America are more loyal than those who love baseball. Football season brings the great rivalries of colleges and professional teams and more fans watch the Superbowl than any other sporting event.
