AMERICAN TRIBUTE PAINTED TEN YEARS AGO FEATURES BOSTON SYMPHONY

written by Hall Groat Sr.

Although all the musicians are fictitious my intent was to conjure up a sense of patriotism. The basic colors are red, white and blue. There is so much action and animation in the musicians, it can bring a smile to the faces of viewers—American flag blowing in the wind and the works. The first year it was seen by Mr Winn, director of his Orleans, Cape Cod gallery, he asked if it could be featured in his front gallery windows during the July4th celebrations. Of course, the gallery sold many of my works that season. American Tribute received much exposure —however was not sold and is back in our collection and still available. Showing work on Cape Cod is best for artists who at least summer on the cape as galleries do not like to hold an artist`s work throughout the winter season for reasons of insurance costs and shipping art to and from the artist`s studios.  The galleries also prefer to handle works by artists who have social ties to their area who become patrons of the artists.  It`s all about money and the seasons are short. Being good at your art is important although “who buys your art “is a huge factor in sales.

I spent ten years showing with Tom Gaglione, owner of the Wellfleet Gallery on Rt. 6 in Wellfleet. There were so many well established artists at that time — one had to fight for wall space for exposure. My first year Tom told me his customers love to look for the up and coming and he was right as I met Admiral Chester Nimitz Jr`s whole family and they all loved my smaller paintings in acrylic. They bought at least twelve of my works in a two year period. Of course many other works of mine were sold on Worth Ave, Palm beach Fl. where Tom had a small gallery in Via Mizner. He promoted me in the Palm Beach Social Pictorial and sales increased. I had to take many trips during that time in my life with my family and we always made a vacation out of it. On my last day picking up remaining work on the cape, Tom said,” I hope I did a good job for you Hall. We sold 110 of your paintings in our galleries. “
