Antique Roller Skates – Classical Oil Painting
In Volume 28, Antique Roller Skates, Professor Groat teaches students an indirect approach to painting, involving two distinct stages. He begins the large 20×24 in. oil on stretched canvas painting with a transparent imprimatura undertone consisting of Raw Umber and Sap Green. After waiting two days for the undertone to dry, he returns to the canvas to add a variety of warm and cool tone to gradually suggest the metal wheels, old leather ankle straps and keys.
The indirect painting approach that Hall teaches within this video is very similar to 15th-18th century great masters such as, Diego Velázquez and Leonardo Da Vinci. Both of these painters often explored imprimatura undertones consisting of a warm umber and cool green.
